What Are Student Hours?

Student Hours are a requirement for completing BASI Teacher Training programs and obtaining a certificate. Student Hours are to be completed independently by the student outside of the course modules. Time spent during course modules cannot be counted towards Student Hours. Students may begin logging hours after attendance of their first course module. 

Student hours may be completed at a BASI Host Studio (subject to terms and conditions) or at any Pilates studio that allows students to use their space. Some studios may charge a studio use fee—check with the local studio owner for their terms and conditions. 

Student Hour requirements for each program are available on the Program Requirements and Examination Process page on our website. Division of hours among apparatus can be at the student's discretion. BASI does not set a specific required number of hours per apparatus. 

Observation Hours

Observation hours are completed by observing an instructor lead either a group or private session. Fifty percent of a student’s observation hours can be completed online by watching videos within the course in the BASI Portal, on BASI Interactive, or on our BASI YouTube channel. We hope each BASI Pilates student will have the opportunity to work directly with BASI instructors. However, we understand that not everyone has access to a BASI studio or instructor. For this reason, we do not require observation hours to be completed with BASI Instructors.


Self-Practice Hours

Self-practice hours are completed by attending sessions with a BASI instructor, practicing with fellow students, or practicing independently. These hours can be completed either at a studio or at home.


Student Teaching Hours

Student teaching hours are spent teaching other students, family members, friends, and eventually clients. Teaching can take place in a studio or at home.


Keeping Track of Hours

Students will log their hours in the BASI Portal. Video or signature verification of completed hours is not required. To log hours, go to the course in the BASI Portal and click on the Student Hours tab.




Click the button to add the desired hours. Enter the number of hours, location, date, and any additional notes, then click 'Save.'



Once saved, the hour(s) entered will be logged.
