Teaching Evaluation and Practical Exam Expectations

Teaching Evaluation and Practical Exam Expectations

Completing your student hours—particularly Self-Practice and Teaching—will strengthen your confidence and prepare you for the Final Exam. BASI examiners use a rubric for grading, and a score of 70% or higher is required to pass. Focusing on the criteria listed below during your practice will be especially valuable in preparing for the exam.

During the Teaching Evaluation, examiners assess how effectively you teach a Pilates session while maintaining professionalism, safety, and clear communication. Areas of focus include:
  1. Your presentation, attitude, and preparedness
  2. Use of verbal, visual, and tactile guidance to clearly communicate movements
  3. Ability to observe, analyze, and provide appropriate corrections
  4. Managing time effectively and sequencing exercises properly using the BASI Block System
  5. Engagement with your client and creating a session that is appropriate for their level
  6. Following equipment safety protocols and demonstrating familiarity with equipment
  7. Teaching with precision following the BASI method and tailoring instruction to individual needs

During the Practical Exam, examiners will be evaluating your overall understanding, skill, and approach to the exercises. Areas of focus include:
  1. Proper setup for each exercise
  2. Coordination of movement and breath
  3. Control, precision, and flow in your movement
  4. Familiarity with the equipment, including correct spring settings and safe use
